I am successful in my career, I have a healthy family and I consider myself to be very lucky. A couple of years ago, I found myself struggling to cope and increasingly disengaged and deeply challenged to do the simplest of things to keep my life going, let alone be happy.

I was diagnosed with depression and I have fought a hard won battle that never really ends. I am lucky because I have a strong support network and an understanding that help is available, and I have been able to take advantage of that to a positive end.

The three most impactful lessons I have learned are that you are never alone, you need to really listen to others and you need to act, taking even small steps for yourself and others. Awareness is out there and those that take the small shuffling steps and act are my heroes.

I want to be a hero to myself and others, even if no one knows it.
